SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar stood on the second step of the podium of the Saturday race at the eighth round of the Formula Renault Eurocup, which takes place on September 28-29 in Barcelona (Spain). In the morning qualifying, Alexander was classified third, 0.3 seconds behind the leader. An hour later, Smolyar was able to immediately gain one position in the race, wich started a couple of hours later, moved up to second place and kept it to the finish.
Alexander Smolyar scored 18 points for second place in the race, which allowed him to close the gap to Victor Martins, who now takes second place in the overall standings of the championship. Alexander has 198 points, against his closest rival Martins with 209.5 points.
“On Friday we had a very difficult day: we missed the first practice session, drove a few laps during the second one, and therefore, by the beginning of the qualifying round I had very little practice on this track,” SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar said. “Therefore, I am glad that I was able to be third fastest. I had a very good start in the race, I was able to gain one position. Then I tried to get closer to the leader, but due the dirty air from his car, I couldn’t do it in any way. The Barcelona track is known for the fact that there are very few overtaking points. In the middle of the race, when the leader broke away a little from me, I made a small mistake by hitting the grass in a fast corner. However, I managed to find the balance of the car, drive to the finish line and stand on the second step of the podium, so I am very pleased with the result.”
The second qualifying round and race will be take place on Sunday, September 29th. The qualifying starts at 10:00, the race - at 14:25 Moscow time.
