SMP Racing junior driver Alexander Smolyar finished second in Race 2 of the Formula Renault Eurocup round, which took place on May 11-12 at Silverstone, England.

In the two qualifying sessions of the weekend, Alexander showed the second result among twenty participants. In the first race, Smolyar managed to become the leader of the race and quickly built out a gap from the rivals, but was forced to retire with a broken suspension on lap nine. In the second race, the Russian had a successful start and kept second position until the finish line.

“In general, the weekend turned out to be quite good, although we could show much better results,” Alexander Smolyar said. “Everything went according to our plan, the training was successful, even under the rainy conditions. In the first qualifying session I made a small mistake and had P2 on the starting grid. In the first race, I managed to take the lead and build the gap from pursuers, but then the engine started to fail and after that the suspension broke, and I had to finish the race. I wanted to win the second race. To achieve it, I needed to overtake Piastri in the first turn in order to avoid a slipstream, but my plan did not work out as Oscar had higher pace. And at the end of the race I also struggled with the tyre degradation. Of course, I wanted the result to be better, so we will continue to work and improve.”

The third round of the Formula Renault Eurocup will take place on May 23-26 in Monaco.
