SMP Racing driver Sergey Sirotkin has been signed as a reserve driver for the Renault F1 Team in the 2019 season.

The important tasks of the Russian driver on the team will be work in the team’s factory, tests on the simulator, support of the team during race weekends of Formula 1 Grand Prix. If necessary, Sergey will be able to replace the main driver of Renault F1 Team on the track.
“We have made a decision that in 2019 Sergey will return to the Renault F1 Team,” said the founder and head of the SMP Racing program Boris Rotenberg. “The main competition in the season 2019 for Sergey is the World Endurance Racing Championship, where he will drive the BR1 prototype for our SMP Racing team. At the same time, he will return to Formula 1 as a reserve driver for the Renault team. We expect from Sergey that he will use his full potential in the FIA WEC and will also be ready to possibly return to Formula 1 in the future.”

“I am very pleased to rejoin the friendly Renault F1 Team and return to Formula 1,” Sergey Sirotkin commented. “We are well acquainted with the team, I spent the whole 2017 in their factory and in the pit box. It would be interesting to learn how far Renault has advanced in the development of the car over the past year - because last season we were rivals, and I could not see the work from the inside. I am pleased to join the team as a reserve driver and work alongside Nico Hulkenberg, with whom we have previously collaborated, and Daniel Ricciardo, with whom I didn’t have a chance to work closely. I am sure, it will be an interesting season and I wish the Renault F1 Team to fight for the highest positions.”
